Boxer Goran Gogic Arrested
The US Department of Justice charged former heavyweight boxer Goran Gogic on Monday with maritime trafficking of more than $1 billion in cocaine through US ports. According to the DOJ, he was apprehended on Sunday night while attempting to board an international flight from Miami.
According to court documents, Gogic has been charged with one count of conspiracy to violate the Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act and three counts of violating the Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in prison, with a maximum sentence of life in prison, according to the DOJ.
Charges
The amounts of cocaine that Gogic and his co-conspirators allegedly tried to move were “staggering,” according to Breon Peace, US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and totaled more than 20 tons.
According to the DOJ and court documents, Gogic allegedly conspired with others between May 2018 and July 2019 to distribute massive amounts of cocaine sourced from Colombia to Europe on commercial cargo ships loaded in the US. According to the DOJ, three shipments of cocaine were seized.

What Happened?
Gogic was jailed after appearing in federal court in Miami on Monday, according to Gogic’s attorney Lawrence Hashish, who also told CNN that his client was surprised by the charges and that he had traveled to the United States for a boxing convention in Puerto Rico. Gogic maintains his innocence.
Gogic’s detention hearing in Miami federal court is scheduled for November 7, according to Hashish, although the date may change because Gogic is presently quarantined there. For a response, CNN contacted the Montenegrin consulate in New York.
According to BoxRec, Gogic’s boxing career lasted 11 years, from 2001 to 2012. He left the game with a record of 21 victories, four losses, and two ties.
